The Antarctic Peninsula!
Whilst safely docked in Puerto Williams, "Fin Del Mundo", six of our team took advantage of the location and went off adventuring in South America, Machu Pichu, the Amazon River, the Atacama Desert... leaving Jon and I behind to ready the boat for the next leg of our journey, Antarctica. Provision the boat, fuel up, small maintenance projects & clean; Ugly Betty was ready again. We were lucky with our weather window and were able to cast off our lines two days after everyone

Four Months in Patagonia
After a month on the dock in Puerto Montt, Chile, the whole crew arrived, ready for our next adventure. Bruce, Nora, Steve, Jon and I, (the regulars), were joined by Magnus (our Patagonia & Antarctic guide), and his wife Julia. A last-minute arrival to the crew, bringing it to eight in all, was the addition of my God Daughter, Grace. We spent the week provisioning, getting to know the local supermarkets and farmer's markets very well! According to Magnus, our next opportu

Easter Island
Our voyage from Pitcairn Island to Easter Island was a fairly unremarkable 5 days, as we followed the Big Blue Bayou. Not sure if we were going to be able to stop in any of the islands along this route, we were lucky once again to have clear weather for a visit to Easter Island. In case you're wondering, Easter Island (local name "Rapa Nui") is the island with the huge statues (called Moai) that litter the island. They date back to between 1250 and 1500, built to commemorat

Pitcairn Island
For those who haven't heard of Pitcairn Island, I'll give a little background. Following the famous 1789 mutiny on the HMS Bounty, Fletcher Christian set Captain Bligh adrift in a small boat, with Bligh's loyalists. Christian then spent months searching the South Pacific for a safe haven to escape the British authority. If found, he and his men would be put to death; Mutiny was a hanging offence. They found Pitcairn Island, and after taking everything from the ship that t

Pacific Crossing, West to East
In our excitement of being in Chile, we jumped straight into posting about Patagonia, but our Pacific crossing from Tahiti is definitely worth a mention; in a way, it was a bit of a highlight to be honest. We had decided to go to Patagonia via Tahiti, rather than fighting the Humbolt current down the coast of South America. We knew it was the wrong time of year to attempt a West to East transit in the Southern Pacific ocean, but knew that if any boat could handle it, it was

Fueling up in Patagonia
This is a pretty clever way to fuel up the boat when there is no fuel dock. The hose from the fuel truck wasn't long enough, so.....

Puerto King, Tierra Fuego, Chile
Solitude is the name of the song, and that's what we have. No people, towns, boats..... nothing for 100's of miles. This is our snug little cove / home for 3 days now. It's blowing a gale, as it does almost perpetually here. We might cast off lines tomorrow, and move on. Cape horn is just 150 miles away!
